Bernhard Henrik Crusell (1775-1838) born in Uusikaupunki, Western Finland. When he was eight, the family moved to Nurmijärvi. At the age of 16, Bernhand Henrik moved to Sweden, where he worked as a clarinet player in the Swedish Royal Court in Stockholm. He composed mainly chamber music, songs and clarinet concertos as well as an opera called Pieni orjatar (The Little Slave-Woman), which was premiered in Stockholm in 1824. Since 1982, the city of Uusikaupunki has been the site for the annual woodwind-orientated festival, Crusell Week.
The honorary march of the military bands in Finland is an unnamed march by Crusell, of which the name Crusellin marssi (Crusell’s March) is used.
